Senior Hunger in America
- Oklahoma currently ranks 12th in the nation for food insecurity among older adults. After a lifetime of hard work, many living on fixed incomes don’t have the resources to afford rent, utilities, medical bills, prescriptions and purchase groceries. It is anticipated that as the boomer generation continues to retire and age, more Oklahoma seniors are going to need our help.
- We know that far too many senior households are forced to make the impossible choice between food and medical care or medication. This is especially dire as older adults are regularly consuming lower quantities of key nutrients and are at an increased risk of having a chronic health condition, including diabetes (74%), congestive heart failure (71%), heart attack (64%), asthma (78%), and depression (262%). We also know that senior individuals who are disabled or identify as Black or Hispanic, are more than twice as likely to be food insecure.
- Less than half of eligible senior citizens are enrolled and receiving SNAP benefits (formerly Food Stamps) – making assistance programs for SNAP enrollment even more critical for seniors.
- The Regional Food Bank is committed to mitigating the adverse effects of food insecurity among senior citizens by offering healthy food options through the Food for Seniors Programs and program partners.
- For more information about senior hunger, please see The State of Senior Hunger Executive Summary and The State of Senior Hunger Full Report.
