“I think the beauty in it is that they actually have a place that they can feel comfortable, be just kids, not have to worry about where their next meal’s coming from,” Constance says.
The Pitts Recreation Center Kids Café is so much more than an after-school program. It’s a hub of energy and excitement, with activities like art, music, dancing and games that let children laugh, play and make friends. And the meals and snacks the students receive give them the fuel they need to take advantage of all the fun.
“It’s really important because you notice the ones that this is probably their last meal of the day. Sometimes they go home, and their cabinets are bare … it happens,” she says.

“No one can focus when they’re hungry,” Constance says. “And not having to worry about it helps so much in the community. It’s a beautiful thing.”
