SSM Health, a mission-driven Catholic health system, has partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma since 2018, working to combat food insecurity with a deep commitment to holistic health.

“Food insecurity has been a top priority for SSM Health Industries in Oklahoma,” says Andrew Ochs, regional vice president of Mission Integration. “And of course, the Regional Food Bank is just the natural go-to partner to help address food insecurity in a number of different ways.”

During the early days of their partnership, employees volunteered in the warehouse, packing food boxes for distribution. From there, the group began funding Backpacks for Kids in Rockwood elementary schools and have expanded to include Midwest City Elementary School as well.

Then, SSM Health began introducing food pharmacies in their facilities. These locations distribute food boxes to patients as they leave appointments or are discharged, providing not only nutritious food but information on how to get connected to long-term food resources.

The first food pharmacy launched in 2021 at SSM Health’s Family Medicine Residency Clinic in Oklahoma City. Over time, the program expanded to locations in Shawnee, Midwest City, Tecumseh and several rural clinics, with distribution tailored to meet local needs.

“We weren’t exactly sure how much of a need there would be, but we quickly identified that there was a very significant need,” Andrew shares. “It helped us address a need amongst our patient population. … It was a soul filler for our staff who were involved in the distribution of the food boxes.”

SSM Health employees continue to participate in hands-on volunteering efforts through their Mission Action Team. This allows staff and their families to get involved, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to building a stronger, healthier community.

“[The Regional Food Bank] is one of our most trusted partners and really an essential partner as we try to live our mission as a Catholic organization trying to address food insecurity in a compassionate way,” Andrew says. “We couldn’t serve our community effectively if it wasn’t for the Regional Food Bank and the way that they’ve been able to partner with us these last many years.”

From providing funding and volunteers to launching innovative programs like food pharmacies, SSM Health serves our community with compassion and dedication. Thank you!
