A student poses for a photo at Raider Necessities food pantry

A typical Rose State College student is over 30, a single parent, unemployed and facing financial hardships.

That’s why the Regional Food Bank partnered with the college to open the Raider Necessities pantry in 2019. It’s a vital service for low-income students and their families.

“They’re struggling to balance being a single parent with going to school and meeting the needs of their children, which often includes food insecurity,” says Keisha Williams, Director of EmPower, which helps single parents at Rose State.

Williams often refers students to the pantry for help. As a single mom herself, she knows what a difference it can make.

“It can be the difference between eating and not eating,” she says. “The food pantry has definitely been a blessing, and I’m grateful for our relationship with the Regional Food Bank.”

Elizabeth, a Rose State student who volunteers at the pantry, says recipients are thankful to be able to come by and fill a box with food.

“A lot of them have kids,” says Elizabeth, who also sometimes needs some help from the pantry. “The pantry is really helpful, especially for families with little ones.”

Thanks to you, college students facing hunger get the help they need!
