Husband and wife Robert and Linda understand more than most how essential food banks are to the communities they serve. They’ve seen the benefits from both sides, as volunteers and recipients.
They’ve been longtime volunteers at a food bank in Chandler and have been visiting the Stroud Food Pantry for a little over a year now.
“It’s just hard times,” Robert says.
“We just come to get extra stuff when we need it in between — when we don’t have money,” adds Linda. “My husband is disabled, and I had to quit working in 2018 because of my back.”
Linda used to work as a certified nursing assistant at a nearby senior center. With both out of work, they’ve had a tough time paying their bills and still having enough for food.
“Our income went down quite a bit, plus everything is just so high [in cost] now, and it just makes it hard,” Linda says.
Thankfully, the Stroud Food Pantry helps fill the gap between what they have and what they need.
“It helps stretch things,” Linda says, adding that the canned goods and nonperishable items are a big help to have on hand when they need it, too.
Robert and Linda are thankful for the extra help and especially the kindness they are treated with every time they visit.
“They’re really nice people — friendly and great,” Robert says.
