Local Business Continues Feeding Hungry Children in Western Oklahoma

The Sweetness Factory Donates Profits to Food for Kids

(WEATHERFORD, OKLA.) – July 5, 2016 - The Sweetness Factory in Weatherford has been teaming up with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to help fight childhood hunger, one sweet treat at a time. For the last four years, owner Deborah Hanson has been donating profits from the Sweetness Factory to fight hunger through the Regional Food Bank’s Food for Kids programs.

The Sweetness Factory has more than 300 different flavors of cupcakes, 72 bulk candies, a 22 flavor salt water taffy bar, inspirational gifts and a shipping program. The shop is open Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

One in four children in Oklahoma struggles with hunger. Thanks to donations from businesses like the Sweetness Factory, the Regional Food Bank’s Food for Kids programs, including the Backpack Program, provided more than 3.2 million meals to more than 37,600 chronically hungry children last year.

Through the Backpack Program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, non-perishable and nutritious food on Friday to sustain them over weekends and school holidays. During the 2014 - 2015 school year, more than 18,500 students in 514 schools participated in the Backpack Program in central and western Oklahoma.  In Custer County, 222 students at eight schools participated in the Backpack Program during the 2014-2015 school year.

“I’ve seen behavioral issues that stem from hunger,” shared a Summer Feeding coordinator.  “When the children aren’t well-fed, they act out. Hunger affects everything: behavior, health, school, social interactions. We are very thankful for the Regional Food Bank.  They make it possible for us to provide those basic needs to our kids.”

Established in 1980, the Regional Food Bank is the largest private, domestic hunger-relief organization in the state of Oklahoma. Last fiscal year, the nonprofit distributed 49.9 million pounds of food and products through a network of nearly 1,250 charitable feeding programs and schools in 53 central and western Oklahoma counties.

Together, we can solve hunger. For more information about the Regional Food Bank, or to make a donation, visit regionalfoodbank.org or call 405-600-3136.
