It's Not Too Late for Children to Receive Complimentary Summer Meals

Summer Feeding Program Fights Hunger and Feeds Hope

(OKLAHOMA CITY) – June 22, 2016 – According to United States Department of Agriculture, 440,000 children in Oklahoma participated in free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program in fiscal year 2015.

When school is out for the summer, many of these students are left wondering where their next meal will come from.  The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is fighting childhood hunger all summer long by providing complimentary meals and snacks to children 18 and under through its Summer Feeding Program.

“Research has found that some children consume up to 50 percent of their total daily calories at school during the school year,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank. “Each year, children who rely on free or reduced-price school meal programs lose access to vital breakfasts and lunches for nearly three months. This means families who are already struggling to make ends meet, are faced with the additional burden of replacing up to 10 meals per week. The Summer Feeding program helps alleviate that financial stress and provide hope, in the form of food, to students.”

This year, in central and western Oklahoma, the Regional Food Bank is partnering with 116 Summer Feeding sites with help from the Summer VISTA program.  Summer Feeding, which runs through July 29, is supported by the USDA, the Oklahoma Department of Education, Sodexo and the community.

“Oklahoma ranks last in the nation for the percentage of kids participating in the federal Summer Nutrition Programs – out of 50 states and Washington D.C.,” said Bivens.  “If you know any child 18 and under who would benefit from this program, please let them know the Regional Food Bank is here to help.”

The Regional Food Bank will provide complimentary summer meals weekdays at the sites and times listed below in the metro area. All sites are closed on July 4.
