Homeland Stores' Produce for Kids Campaign Fighting Childhood Hunger in Oklahoma
(OKLAHOMA CITY) –June 5, 2019 - Homeland is uniting with their produce partners to promote healthy eating during the Produce for Kids campaign. The campaign raises funds for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma's Food for Kids Programs while offering Homeland shoppers healthy meal solutions and recipes.
Produce for Kids is supported by five of Homeland's fresh fruit and vegetable partners. From June 5 to July 2, shoppers are encouraged to purchase items from the following companies:
- Delano Farms Company Table Grapes
- Sage Fruit® Apples & Cherries
- RealSweet® Vidalia® Onions
- Victory Garden® Grape Tomatoes
“In our eighth year, we are excited to once again implement the Produce for Kids campaign in Homeland stores to educate families about the benefits of eating nutritious produce,” said John Shuman, president of Produce for Kids. “We are extremely proud of the $6.7 million we have raised to support children and families nationwide and are excited to partner again with Homeland to help end hunger in the Oklahoma area.”
Customers can find participating items by following in-store displays and signage. Shoppers can also visit produceforkids.com/Oklahoma to find more than 400 registered dietitian-approved recipes and meal planning tools.
“At Homeland, our mission is to provide our customers with a fresh and healthy experience every time they enter our stores while creating strong local communities,” said Kenneth Jackson, Homeland produce director. “Our partnership with Produce for Kids encourages our shoppers to introduce fresh fruits and vegetables to their families while supporting local children in need of food.”
In the seven years of the campaign, nearly $60,000 has been donated to the Regional Food Bank. This financial support has helped to provide more than 240,000 meals for chronically hungry Oklahoma children.
"We are overjoyed to once again be a part of a campaign that not only helps to provide for the one in four Oklahoma children in need of food assistance but also promotes healthy eating choices among all residents," said Katie Fitzgerald, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank.
The Regional Food Bank's Food for Kids Programs, like the Backpack Program, provided more than 2.3 million meals to children in 53 counties in central and western Oklahoma last year. Through the Backpack Program, elementary school children that have been identified as food insecure are provided food to help them get through weekends and long holiday breaks.
You can also join the fight against hunger by making a donation. For every $1 donated, the Regional Food Bank is able to help provide for four meals. Make a donation by visiting rfbo.org/donate or by calling 405-600-3136.
