News 9 Continues Commitment to Fighting Hunger in Oklahoma

Employees Pack 15,672 Pounds of Food, 13,060 Meals for Regional Food Bank

(OKLAHOMA CITY) – April 26, 2018 – On April 25, News 9 and Griffin Communications employees helped the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma fight hunger by sorting and packing food for Oklahomans with inconsistent access to healthy food. Office employees, news anchors, reporters, weatherpersons, cameramen and management worked side by side to fight hunger and feed hope across central and western Oklahoma. In a matter of four hours, employees packed enough food to provide 13,060 meals for children, families and seniors living with hunger

“We are so grateful for Griffin Communications and News 9’s generous support to help us advance our mission of ‘Fighting Hunger…Feeding Hope,’” said Katie Fitzgerald, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank. “In addition to volunteering, over the last seven years Griffin Communications, News 9 and News 9 viewers have raised more than $1.2 million to fight childhood hunger in central and western Oklahoma.”

One in four children in Oklahoma has inconsistent access to healthy food. Last school year, the Regional Food Bank provided more than 3 million meals to chronically hungry children through Food for Kids, which includes the Backpack Program, Kids Café, Summer Feeding and the School Pantry Program.

  • Through the Backpack Program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, non-perishable and nutritious food on Friday to sustain them over weekends and school holidays.
  • Kids Café and Snack Sites provide food, mentoring, tutoring and a variety of other activities to children in central and western Oklahoma.
  • Summer Feeding offers free breakfast and/or lunch to children 18 and younger in low-income areas over the summer months.
  • The School Pantry Program provides chronically hungry middle and high school students with food to sustain them after school and over the weekends.

Last year, the number of students in the Food for Kids Programs increased by 17 percent from 37,658 students to 43,991. Every $100 raised ensures an Oklahoma student will have enough to eat and thrive through a Food for Kids Program for an entire year. For more information visit
