$150,000 Food for Kids Match Runs Through Sept. 30

Help Make This a Hunger-Free School Year

(OKLAHOMA CITY)  – Aug. 27, 2018 –Help make this a hunger-free school year by making a donation to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids Programs. The Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma, Lezlie and David Hudiburg, David Gorham and an anonymous donor have issued a $150,000 matching gift challenge to support the Regional Food Bank in fighting childhood hunger in the state. Every donation made to the Food for Kids Programs between now and Sept. 30 will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $150,000.

“A child’s chance for a bright tomorrow starts with getting enough healthy food to eat today,” said Katie Fitzgerald, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank. “The Regional Food Bank is working hard to end childhood hunger in Oklahoma by providing chronically hungry children with the meals they need today to help them thrive. That’s why supporting the Food for Kids Match Campaign is so important.”

The Regional Food Bank provides enough food to feed 136,000 Oklahomans every week, 37 percent of whom are children. Last school year, the Regional Food Bank also provided nearly 2.4 million meals for chronically hungry children through its Food for Kids Programs, which includes the Backpack and School Pantry Programs.

Through the Backpack Program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, non-perishable and nutritious food on Fridays to sustain them over weekends and school holidays. During the 2017-2018 school year, 19,051 students in 481 schools participated in the Backpack Program.

“I’m so happy the Regional Food Bank is here for everyone who can’t afford to feed their families all the time,” said Layna, whose son participates in the Backpack Program. “Without them and the people who give to them, most of us would be starving.”

The School Pantry Program provides chronically hungry middle and high school students with food to sustain them after school and over the weekends. During the 2017-2018 school year, 6,494 students in 172 schools participated in the School Pantry Program.

Working together, we can end childhood hunger in Oklahoma. Normally, a $100 gift will support a child in a Food for Kids Program for an entire school year; however, during the Food for Kids Match, gifts double to provide food for two children for an entire school year.
