Shanan Warden calls it “struggle time” — that week or so at the end of the month when her husband’s paycheck has stretched as far as it can. When it can’t stretch any further, she says, “it’s just not enough to keep food coming into the house. It’s hard sometimes.”

Last fall, Yolanda Rogers was robbed. They took everything — her clothes, her ID, even her 8-year-old son’s shoes. “I didn’t know what to do,” she remembers. “My sister said, ‘Let’s get you over to BritVil.’”
