When Poor Health Drained Susan’s Savings, You Gave Her “the Gift of Life”

A few years ago, Susan Brower and her husband ran into problems with their insurance. She suddenly found herself facing severe health issues with no idea how she was going to pay her medical and other bills. “Even if we only gave all the doctors $20 a month, we still wouldn’t have anything left for food,” she says.

“I had to come to a food pantry for the first time in my life, and it was very embarrassing,” she says. “I really had to swallow my pride.”

But that’s what Susan did. And when she finally came to Reaching Our City, a Regional Food Bank partner agency in northwest Oklahoma City, she was amazed at how friendly and helpful everyone was. Thanks to you, she and her husband got the food they needed to get by.

Now, Susan pays back the help you gave her by volunteering at Reaching Our City herself. But she’s starting to worry about the future. “I had a heart procedure last year, so the bills are starting to get to me again. I’m probably going to have to start using the pantry again soon.”

But this time, Susan isn’t scared. She knows she has friends at the pantry, and in people like you who make the work of the Regional Food Bank possible.

“Oh, they’re wonderful. Probably the most wonderful people there are,” she says. “People who have the finances and are willing to share them with someone else, it’s like giving the gift of life,” she says. “I feel like crying just thinking about it.

“I just want to give everyone who donates a hug and say, ‘Thank you,’” Susan says, and it’s YOU she’s talking about! “I thank them from the bottom of my heart for helping me and my family.” Your gift during the Senior Match Campaign will go twice as far to help seniors like Susan, so please give generously. Thanks again!
