From Millionaire to Broke and Homeless, Now Steven is Helping Others, Thanks to You

“I was a millionaire,” Steven Wheeler says. “I owned houses and stores in Washington State. Then, I developed a health issue, and my son was having financial problems here in Oklahoma. He said, ‘Move in with me, and we’ll share expenses.’ Once he had drained my savings, he said, ‘If you don’t have any more money, get out of my house.’ I lived for months in a shack with no water or power.”

One day, Steven remembers, he was walking past the Community Market of Pottawatomie County, a Food & Resource Center affiliated with Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. “I had four dollars in my pocket and needed something to eat, so I went in. They said, ‘We don’t sell food. We’re here to help people in need.’ And I thought, ‘Well, that’s me.’

“They helped me,” Steven says, “and it was such a wonderful experience, I’ve been volunteering here ever since.”

“What we do really fills a need,” he says. “You can come in here and get help, but it’s about so much more than just the food. It can bring joy into people’s lives to know someone cares.’”
