One in eight Americans in communities across the United States struggle with hunger, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In Oklahoma, one in six residents do not have consistent access to food. To raise awareness and combat the issue, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Feeding America and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma are kicking off its sixth annual “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” (FHSC) campaign. The campaign runs from April 22 to May 20. There are more than 260 eligible food items and for every one item purchased at a Walmart, the company will donate the equivalent of one meal. At Sam's Clubs, for every one item purchased the company will donate the equivalent of five meals. Eligible items are clearly marked with the Fight Hunger Spark Change logo.
The number of meals provided by the campaign can be found by visiting walmart.com/fighthunger.
Once a donor to the BritVil Community Food Pantry, a partner agency of the Regional Food bank, Stanley is now receiving food assistance since he lost his job. He has two children and his wife at home. Stanley says the pantry helps to "lessen the blow."
"It helps a lot...It stretches perfectly. It's very helpful. It warms my heart that it is here."
Bethany relies on food she receives from one of the Regional Food Bank’s community-based partner agencies to while she is in between jobs. She lives with her boyfriend and after living expenses the two aren't able to afford food.
"It's helping feed us. Without it, we would go hungry for sure."
The Tarrant Area Food Bank in Fort Worth has issued a challenge to the Regional Food Bank. They believe they can raise more money during the Fight Hunger. Spark Change. campaign. Help us beat Texas by visiting your local Walmart and Sam’s Club to purchase participating products.
With 749 million meals achieved over the last five years, Oklahoma customers and members can help the Feeding America network secure its
1 billion cumulative meals goal and our win over Texas in three ways:
For every participating product purchased at U.S. Walmart stores, Sam’s Clubs or on Walmart.com during the campaign, the supplier will donate the monetary equivalent of at least one meal ($0.10) on behalf of a Feeding America member food bank, up to applicable limits. Each participating item purchased at Sam's Club will provide the equivalent of five meals.
