(OKLAHOMA CITY) – April 26, 2017 – Thanks to Jersey Mike’s Subs and its customers, $70,000 was raised to fight childhood hunger for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids Backpack Program. On March 29, as part of the organization’s nationwide “Day of Giving,” Jersey Mike’s donated all of the sales from its Oklahoma City metro-area and Stillwater stores to fight childhood hunger in Oklahoma. The stores also collected donations during March as part of Jersey Mike’s “Month of Giving.” In total, 350 children will receive food for an entire school year as a result of this generous donation.
“The promotion was a huge success because of our customers,” said Charlie Brown, franchise owner and area director for Jersey Mike’s. “The donations came from Oklahomans, and we want to thank them for helping feed hungry kids in our state.”
Local Jersey Mike’s restaurants that participated in the promotion included:
Through “Month of Giving” last year, these locations raised $50,000. Over the last five years, nearly $270,000 has been raised for the Food for Kids program through this campaign.
One in four children has inconsistent access to food. Every $200 donated to the Backpack Program will provide food for a chronically hungry elementary school student for an entire school year. Through this program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, non-perishable and nutritious food on Friday to sustain them over weekends and school holidays.
“No child should have to worry where their next meal will come from,” said Katie Fitzgerald, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. “Thanks to Jersey Mike’s ‘Day of Giving,’ we can ensure that more chronically hungry children will receive the nutrition they need to grow and thrive. This year, we’ve added almost 3,000 children to the Backpack Program and donations are still needed to help meet the increase in need.”
