(Oklahoma City) – Aug. 2, 2017 – Thanks to Backpacks with a Purpose (B-WAP), for every backpack purchased, two backpacks are donated to nonprofits, including the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids Backpack Program.
“We are very thankful to B-WAP for their continued support of our Backpack Program,” says Katie Fitzgerald, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank. “This past school year, the Regional Food Bank served more than 21,000 chronically hungry students through the program – an additional 3,000 students from the previous year. Thanks to B-WAP, many of the backpacks were donated so we could reallocate our resources to provide more food for children.”
One in four children in Oklahoma has inconsistent access to food. Because there is a critical connection between childhood nutrition and cognitive and physical development, even nutritional deficiencies of a relatively short-term nature can negatively impact a child's health, behavior and the ability to concentrate and perform complex tasks.
The Backpack Program provides a backpack of kid-friendly, shelf-stable and nutritious food to sustain children over weekends and school holidays.
McKenna, a fourth grader, looks forward to Fridays when she gets her backpack. “I feel happy whenever I see the blue backpack because it helps me have food,” she said.
