$115,000 Raised to Fight Childhood Hunger
Supports 575 Students in Food for Kids Backpack Program

OKLAHOMA CITY - The 24th Annual Chefs’ Feast, presented by Chesapeake Energy, raised $115,000 for the Food for Kids Backpack program, which will support 575 elementary school students in the program. The money was raised through ticket sales, a live auction, raffle sales, a $10,000 Community Impact Grant from New York Life Insurance Company, and a $5,000 grant from the MDRT Foundation on behalf of Sherry Barton.
The Backpack program provides chronically hungry elementary school children with a backpack filled with non-perishable, kid-friendly food on weekends and holidays throughout the school year. Currently, the program serves nearly 10,000 chronically hungry children in 367 schools in 49 central and western counties. Before receiving help from the program, many of these children had very little or nothing to eat between school lunch on Friday and school breakfast on Monday.
One in five children in Oklahoma will struggle with hunger today. The Backpack Program helps alleviate childhood hunger.
“One of my students was upset because her family had to give away their dog because the family couldn’t afford to pay for his food,” said one Backpack Program coordinator. “The little girl was worried that she might be given away next.”

The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is a private, 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that acts as a link through which the food industry and community may donate food and other goods.
