Regional Food Bank Seeks Volunteers for May 11 Food Drive
April 17, 2013
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma seeks hundreds of volunteers to help sort canned food donations from the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive on Saturday, May 11 at metro-area post office sites.
“More than 500 volunteers are needed to help sort the projected 500,000 pounds of donations that we will receive in the metro-area on May 11,” said David Tester, director of volunteer engagement at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. “By sorting the food on site as the letter carriers bring it in from their routes, we can get it into the homes of those who need it that much faster."
To volunteer, contact David Tester at email@example.com or call 405.600.3154.
As part of the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive, residents in nearly 130 cities in central and western Oklahoma are encouraged to fill a plastic donation bag with nonperishable food donations and leave it next to their mailbox on Saturday, May 11th. Letter Carriers will deliver the donation bags the week of May 6.
Most needed items include: canned meats, meat-based soups, canned fruits, canned vegetables, peanut butter, and rice and beans. Monetary donations can also be made online at regionalfooodbank.org or by calling 405.604.7109. Every dollar donated will provide five meals for hungry Oklahomans.
Last year, the Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers’ Food Drive raised 806,068 pounds of food and $1,069,574 for hungry Oklahomans. This year, the Regional Food Bank hopes to collect enough food and monetary donations to keep pace with the demand for food assistance, which continues to rise.
