200 Oklahoma FFA Students Set to Volunteer at Regional Food Bank

Students Committed to Fighting Hunger in Oklahoma

What:                          Oklahoma FFA students from eight chapters across the state will be donating their time help their neighbors with inconsistent access to food.

Statewide, FFA chapters are also committed to fighting childhood hunger.  Last year, the more than 27,000 Oklahoma FFA members, representing 357 high schools across the state, participated in the FFA Hunger Challenge.  Through this initiative, members donated 515 animals to the Beef for Backpacks and Porks for Packs programs, which produced 771,562 protein sticks for the Backpack Program.  This school year, FFA chapters are on a mission to donate one million protein sticks to the Oklahoma Food Banks. Last year, chapters also donated $9,737, enough to support nearly fifty children in the Backpack Program for an entire school year.

When:                         Saturday, Feb. 25 from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Location/Visuals:      200 FFA members packing boxes and sorting donations at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Volunteer Center, located at 3355 S. Purdue in Oklahoma City.

Why:                           FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

One in four children in Oklahoma struggles with hunger every day. Through the Backpack Program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, non-perishable and nutritious food on Friday to sustain them over weekends and school holidays.  Last school year, 29,000 chronically hungry elementary school children in Oklahoma benefited from this program.

Interviews:                 Oklahoma FFA President Cale Jahn; Katie Fitzgerald, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma; and 200 FFA volunteers.
