First Fidelity Bank Teams Up With Desmond Mason to Fight Hunger
December 17, 2012
OKLAHOMA CITY – Former NBA Player and First Fidelity Bank Spokesman Desmond Mason volunteered at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma alongside employees from First Fidelity as they packed nearly 4,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank’s Food for Kids Backpack Program.
Lee Symcox, president and CEO of First Fidelity Bank also took time away from his office to volunteer with the group. “As a local bank, we understand how important it is to give back to the communities we serve. We’re glad for the opportunity to help Oklahoma families in need through the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.”
Through the Backpack Program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, non-perishable and nutritious food on Friday to sustain them over weekends and school holidays. The Regional Food Bank launched the program in 2003 after learning about an elementary student who fainted while waiting in the school breakfast line on a Monday morning because he had very little food to eat over the weekend. In Fiscal Year 2012, more than 13,500 students in 475 schools participated in the Backpack Program.
“The program helps provide our students with food when they would not otherwise have food on the weekends,” said a Backpack Program Coordinator. “They are then able to focus on school instead of their hunger.”
The Regional Food Bank provides enough food to feed more than 90,000 people each week in 53 central and western Oklahoma counties, yet it is not enough. During the winter months, 40 percent of the Regional Food Bank’s clients have to choose between buying food and paying their electric bill.
Be a part of the solution. Through January 15th, Chesapeake will match all donations made to the Regional Food Bank - up to $1 million! Gifts to the Regional Food Bank’s Food for Kids programs can now help twice as many children struggling with hunger. The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is a private, 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that acts as a link through which the food industry and community may donate food and other goods. The products are then distributed to nearly 1,000 schools and charitable feeding programs in 53 central and western Oklahoma counties. In fiscal year 2012, the Food Bank distributed 42.2 million pounds of food and product to help the charitable community effectively feed people in need. Since its inception in 1980, the Food Bank has distributed more than 462 million pounds of food to feed Oklahoma’s hungry.
