600,000 Oklahomans will wake up today and wonder where their next meal will come from. Oklahoma ranks as the fifth hungriest state in the nation, but thanks to donors, volunteers and advocates, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is "Fighting Hunger...Feeding Hope."
Established in 1980, the Regional Food Bank is the largest private hunger-relief organization in the state of Oklahoma. The Regional Food Bank provides enough food to feed more than 90,000 people each week through a network of more than 825 charitable feeding programs and elementary schools, in 53 central and western Oklahoma counties.
The Regional Food Bank's administrative costs are below four percent, which means 96 cents of every dollar donated helps to directly provide food to Oklahomans in need.
The face of hunger is all too real. It has become younger and it includes the working poor, seniors and children. In today's economy, it also includes the newly unemployed – families who find themselves suddenly out of work and no longer able to afford the same life they've been living.
The face of hunger could be living next door to you; it could be the child playing next to your child in the park; it could be the senior citizen you see buying food using a stack of coupons at the grocery store, counting every penny. Just because you don't recognize the face of hunger, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

One in four children in our state is at risk of hunger every day. There is a critical connection between childhood nutrition and cognitive and physical development, even nutritional deficiencies of a relatively short-term nature negatively impact a child's health, behavior, and the ability to concentrate and perform complex tasks. Food is the most essential school supply. Hungry children cannot learn.
Everyday older Oklahomans are faced with the dilemma of not having enough money to pay for rent, utilities, medical bills, prescriptions and food. 68 percent of senior adults in Oklahoma are food insecure and 11 percent are experiencing hunger.
To ensure adequate nutrition for this high risk population, The Regional Food Bank is committed to assisting over 1,100 senior citizens.
