Senior Centers
A grant from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation's Fund for Oklahoma City and a grant from Oklahoma County Community Support have made it possible to directly deliver food each month to seniors living in 9 Oklahoma City Housing Authority sites. Nearly 700 senior residents receive a sack of nonperishable food items along with produce, refrigerated items, and bread when available. Almost all of the residents being served are living on fixed incomes. The mobile pantry visits the centers toward the end of the month when residents are in the greatest need of assistance.
A resident living on $600 a month says the food she receives each month helps her eat every day of the month instead of skipping meals.
Homebound Seniors
The Food Bank is also developing a partnership with home delivery meal programs. These agencies deliver hot meals to homebound seniors. These seniors are often at the greatest risk for going hungry. Risk factors can include lack of transportation, lack of family/friend support, inability to cook or prepare meals for themselves, special needs, etc…
At this time, 15 home delivery meal programs are partnering with Senior Feeding to identify their clients who are high risk for going hungry. The programs then deliver a sack of nonperishable foods to the clients once a month. These food sacks are provided to the programs at no cost by the Food Bank and include mostly individual, open-and-eat items. Approximately 300 seniors are being served monthly through these partnerships.
Some comments from recipients of the homebound program:
“You just don’t know how much this helps.”
“We are so grateful, thanks so much.”
“The food you bring helps me when I can’t get to the store.”
