Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers Collects Donations for Hungry Students

August 3rd, 2010

OKLAHOMA CITY - Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is dedicated to fighting hunger in Oklahoma.  Not only does the eatery offer delicious food, it is also collecting donations for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids program.  For every dollar that is donated to the Food for Kids program, guests will receive one dollar off their order.  The promotion runs until August 31, 2010 at all seven Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers in Oklahoma City and Enid.

“Freddy’s is so proud to be doing our part to help the children in the community in need, especially during this economic downturn,” said Leslie Allsman, manager of Freddy’s Frozen & Steakburgers in Moore.  “The promotion has been overwhelmingly successful.  So far, we have collected more than $250 in just a few short days. Our goal by the end of August is $7,000. Come by Freddy’s and make your donation today.”

Food for Kids is designed to serve chronically hungry elementary school students.  Children receive a backpack filled with nutritious, kid-friendly food for weekends and school holidays.  Research shows that children living in food-insecure households have more difficulty concentrating in school than children in food-secure households, and the results of this condition have been linked to grade repetition, absenteeism, tardiness, anxiety, aggression, poor math scores, and difficulty with social interaction.

Last school year, the Food for Kids program distributed more than 850,000 pounds of food to nearly 8,000 chronically hungry children in 305 schools in 42 central and western Oklahoma counties. Yet, it is not enough.

“One in five children in Oklahoma will struggle with hunger today,” said Jennifer Gooden, vice president of community initiatives at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.  “For only $200, the Regional Food Bank can provide one child with a backpack every weekend for the entire school year.  Please make a donation today and help us fight childhood hunger in Oklahoma.”
