MOMS Club of Edmond Donates $6,100 to Food 4 Kids

June 16, 2010

EDMOND, OKLA. - A $6,100 donation to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food 4 Kids program from the MOMS Club of Edmond’s Touch-A-Truck event will sponsor 30 elementary students in the program at Orvis Risner, Centennial and Will Rogers elementary schools in Edmond.

More than 60 different types of trucks, including a fire truck, police car, ambulance, cement truck, and school bus  were available for families to explore at the event.

“The MOMS Club of Edmond is ecstatic to be able to help address the hunger problem in our schools by hosting this fun family event,” said Shannon Hogan, member of MOMS Club of Edmond.  “We look forward hosting Touch-A-Truck for years to come and bringing the community together to fight childhood hunger.”

Food 4 Kids provides chronically hungry elementary school children with a backpack full of kid-friendly, nutritious food every Friday to sustain them over weekends and holidays when school meal programs are not available.  In central and western Oklahoma, nearly 8,000 elementary school students benefited from the program last school year.

“It’s unacceptable that one in five children in Oklahoma struggle with hunger each day,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.  “Food 4 Kids helps fight childhood hunger, and we are extremely grateful for this donation.  I want to thank MOMS club of Edmond and the community for making a difference in the life of a hungry child.

A $200 donation is enough to provide one child with a backpack full of food every weekend and school holiday for an entire school year.  Last year, the event raised $6,200, which allowed the Regional Food Bank to provide a Food 4 Kids backpack to 31 chronically hungry elementary school students.  The Regional Food Bank estimates that, with enough funding, an additional 417 students could still benefit from Food 4 Kids in Edmond.
