Second Annual Stuff The Truck Event Feeds Hungry Oklahomans
Employees Pack Semitrailers with 142,080 Pounds of Food
May 13, 2010
More than 500 Devon Energy employees helped the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma by filling six commercial truck trailers with boxes of canned food donations, which will provide nearly 110,000 meals to hungry Oklahomans. The donations were collected through the Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 8, which raised nearly 800,000 pounds of food for the hungry in central and western Oklahoma.
“The Regional Food Bank has become a favorite community cause among Devon employees,” said Devon Senior Vice President Vince White, who also serves on the Regional Food Bank’s board of directors. “I believe that Devon is so supportive because we embrace the organization’s central belief that in the land of plenty, no one should go hungry.”
Devon Energy employees competed to see which team had the most “team spirit” and could also fill the most boxes. A total of 40 teams raced against the clock to pack the 40-pound pantry boxes. Those teams combined to fill 3,552 boxes.
Big Truck Tacos also joined in the fight against hunger by bringing their truck to the Devon Energy building and donating 10 percent of all lunch-time sales to the Regional Food Bank. Thanks to a match by Devon, $423.06 will be donated to the nonprofit.
In addition to the Stuff the Truck Event, Devon employees sorted food donations at the Letter Carriers Food Drive and also volunteer each month at the Regional Food Bank. Devon is a presenting sponsor of this year’s Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers Food Drive. The company and its employees contributed more than $500,000 to the Regional Food Bank last year. This week, employees staged raffles, bake sales, auctions and several other fundraisers to benefit the Regional Food Bank.
“Devon Energy and its employees are committed to fighting hunger in Oklahoma,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. “Thanks to their support and dedication, we are able to provide assistance to those in need.”
As the state’s largest private hunger-relief charity, the Regional Food Bank distributes enough food to help feed more than 77,000 people each week through its network of partner agencies; yet it is still not enough. To meet this demand, the Regional Food Bank is collecting food and money through the Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers Food Drive. Nearly 85 metro businesses join the letter carriers in 32 central and western Oklahoma counties to combat hunger during May.
