“Lighten up, it’s just fashion,” is probably the view most people have towards the fashion world. They’re proponents of the belief that clothing serves a purely functional purpose and nothing else. Those individuals who find the sublime in every stitch of a cashmere knit sweater or become enraptured at the sight of silk chiffon are considered alien to most people who just see a mass of fabric. Clothing is meant to cover not to be coveted. So, for the fashionably indifferent you should probably stop reading at this point.
The Food Bank will hold its first ever fashion event on Saturday, September 25th, hosted by Johnathan Kayne of Project Runway fame. Last year the event took place at his home and was featured on TLC’s Gown Crazy (Google it and watch the show, then send me a link because I can’t seem to find it). So why should you be excited? Because Kayne is creating custom-made designs and featuring them in a runway show to help raise money for the Food Bank’s Food for Kids backpack program. There will be music, hors d’oeuvres, silent auction items and you’ll even have a chance to bid on several one-of-a-kind custom-designed dresses! For fashion freaks, it just doesn’t get much better than that.
Although the Food Bank does so much to raise awareness of the issues hungry Oklahomans face, there are still many who don’t fully comprehend the magnitude of the obstacles the state must overcome in eliminating food insecurity. That’s why I hope the people who attend this event will come away with an eagerness for the fashion and the spectacle but also walk away with an understanding of what the Food Bank does. It’s thrilling to watch the Food Bank develop innovative ways of educating the public on what we do. Not everyone has the chance to work at an organization that willingly embraces the challenge to be inventive.
Not only am I excited for this event because I know we will accomplish what we set out to do, but because it will fulfill another dream of mine, one that I’ve had since I was a child. My passion for fashion started with my first glimpse of a runway show on TV early on Saturday mornings. I learned to wear heels before I learned to ride a bike, which actually remains true to this day since I still haven’t learned to ride a bike. And while I can’t claim to have been a style icon from the beginning, since I did spend a large part of my teenage years resembling a Persian rug due to my fondness for paisley, I did realize one of my passions in life. Now that I’m older and I’ve spent some time working for the Food Bank I’ve realized another passion in my life. And I hope that come September 25th you will do the same.

Kayne wants this event to be over the top! He is planning a full-on production complete with two runway shows – one featuring his latest designs and another with custom items, which will be auctioned off at the event.
Runway models will include local celebs:
Lauren Nelson and Christina Ecker from News 9
Jaime Cerreta, Angie Mock and Liz Dueweke from FOX 25
Lacey Lett from The Spy
Singer/songwriter Sherree Chamberlain (who will also perform!!)
Proceeds from the fashion show, silent auction, wine pull and raffle will go toward the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids program. Food for Kids provides chronically hungry elementary school children with backpacks filled with non-perishable, kid-friendly food to eat over weekends and holidays. There are 25 schools on the waiting list to join the program.

MIO Coalition has set a goal to sell 1 million paper towel rolls by the end of the month. A portion of the sales benefit the Regional Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids program, which provides nearly 8,000 chronically hungry elementary school children with a backpack filled with nutritious, kid-friendly food on weekends and holidays throughout the school year.
Join the “Eat Up” with food prepared by Good Egg Dining Group, a member of the MIO Coalition. DJ Dan from Oklahoma Party Patrol will provide the tunes. Oklahoma’s own Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson Faram and Project Runway’s Johnathan Kayne will be joining in the festivities, so come by for autographs and photos! Senator Andrew Rice will also be in attendance to help celebrate this local initiative.
Purchase MIO paper towels for $2 to play a round of paper towel bowling for a chance to win an MIO gift basket (valued at $150). Win additional free entry in the raffle every time you make a strike!
The first 100 attendees will receive a Made in Oklahoma goodie bag, which includes MIO coupons, a Tastefully Oklahoma cookbook and information about the coalition and the Regional Food Bank. The event will also include giveaways of gift cards to Good Egg Dining Group restaurants, including Red Prime Steak, Iron Starr BBQ and Cheever’s Restaurant.

Sherree Chamberlain has been quite busy lately! In fact, she’s just returning from New York where she played a Springsteen tribute show with Beau Jennings, Paul Basile, and Bryan Dunn. Meanwhile, back at home, her new song “Make Me Happy” is featured in a new Blue 7 holiday commercial. Give it a whirl, it’s really cute!
Tomorrow, she will be joining Project Runway’s Johnathan Kayne as a celebrity bartender; also joining will be KMGL’s Magic Man, Jeff Roberts, and singer/songwriter K.C. Clifford! The Celebrity Council members will be donating their tips to the Regional Food Bank.
It all starts at 5 pm at TapWerks in Bricktown, and it will be going on until 9 pm. Stop by for your chance to meet the group, and to give to a good cause. It feels good to give, right Sherree?

Last week, photographer Samantha Lamb took some amazing photos of Project Runway’s Johnathan Kayne. We’ll be using these in promo materials as he works with us to fight hunger in Oklahoma. He has a number of fundraisers coming up, the first being his celeb bartending night at TapWerks next Wednesday to benefit the Food Bank. (Hope you all can make it!)
We are so excited to be working with him. And wow, these photos are amazing!
