Ok, so I admit that I am not prone to writing blogs. Nor do I claim to have any great writing skills worthy of anyone reading what I have to say. But as I reflect upon what happened last week, I am compelled to share some of my thoughts with you.
Big Truck Tacos Volunteer Night was at the Food Bank on Tuesday, July 27th and we are still reeling from the response. Who knew the power of tacos over the general population? Seriously.
We’ve tried a dozen different ways to attract new volunteers to the Food Bank over the last few years – and we’ve been lucky if a dozen or so people showed up to see our colorful balloons and eat our cake and cookies. We were thinking prim and proper – when, what the people wanted was a big, bodacious taco night.
More than 400 people showed up – and not just to satisfy their craving for an Okie-Baha, Wojo or Flaming Lips taco. They actually wanted to work! Two young men actually refused to leave the assembly line long enough to grab a taco despite my pleading and cajoling (ok, pleading and cajoling is probably a slight exaggeration – but I did remind them that the taco truck would have to leave eventually whether they ate or not).
By the time the night was over, we had a whole new group of volunteers who left with a full stomach and an even fuller heart. They enjoyed a great meal courtesy of BTT and discovered that it only takes a couple of hours to make a huge difference in the lives of their Oklahoma neighbors in need.
So, thank you Big Truck Tacos for donating your time and your tacos and reminding us all about what a powerful influence food is in our lives. In more ways than one.
Did you notice I didn’t even mention that it was our own Taco Tuesday?
98,640 pounds of food was packed for hungry families at Big Truck Tacos Volunteer Night!! Simply amazing. Thank you to the 400+ who helped pack boxes and to Big Truck Tacos for providing free tacos to all the volunteers! What a fun event.
We hope that volunteers will continue to come out during the month of August! We need to help to continue moving product of Emergency Family Boxes out to needy families. To book a group to volunteer, call Jamie Treadaway at 600-3154 or email email@example.com. Open volunteering for individuals is available Monday – Friday from 9 to noon and 1 to 4 pm with no appointment necessary. We hope to see you all soon!
I took a minute to sit down and talk to the Big Truck Tacos owners about tomorrow’s Volunteer Night. Check out this clip, and join us tomorrow night!
This summer, we received a grant that has allowed us to purchase an additional 4.2 million pounds of product to help the hungry in Oklahoma. The product is in our warehouse, but can’t be distributed until volunteers help assemble the Emergency Family Boxes. Per the stipulations of the grant, it all has to be distributed before the end of September.
On Tuesday, July 27th, we are hosting a special Big Truck Taco Volunteer Night 5:30 – 8 pm at the Food Bank (located near the airport in OKC at 3355 S. Purdue). We would love for you, your friends and your family come out that night and help us assemble the boxes that will help needy families!
The Big Truck Taco truck will be selling tacos outside from 5:30-6:30. Once you’ve had some grub, head inside to help assemble boxes. We promise you’ll go home feeling great about what you’ve accomplished in two short hours!! Hope you can make it.
