Food is life. Just as all human beings have a right to life, which is inherent and sacred, they also have a right to food – the fuel of life. A just and merciful society is morally obligated to ensure that all of its members are fed. When some among us go hungry, regardless of the cause, their suffering is a stain on the fabric of our community.
Whether in Oklahoma or elsewhere in the world, hunger rarely occurs because there is simply not enough food; rather, hunger occurs because families and individuals cannot afford to buy the food. The roots of Oklahoma’s hunger problem are embedded in the plots of poverty amidst our pastures of plenty.
